The MBA Guide to IT

Episode 35 - What is Data Privacy Day?

It’s Data Privacy Day (#DataPrivacyDay2019) in the US and Canada so this week we’re talking about Data Privacy.

While not as well known as Arbor Day or Groundhog Day, Data Privacy Day commemorates the signing of the first legally binding treaty on privacy on this day back in 1981.

It’s sponsored by the National Cyber Security Alliance with support from a bunch of companies and organizations.  20CREEK is a 2019 Champion for Data Privacy Day.

They’re live-streaming an event from LinkedIn headquarters beginning at 2 Pacific.  That’s 5 Eastern which is a perfect time to grab a beer and watch people talk about data privacy for 3 hours.  At least that’s what I’ll be doing. I never said my job was glamorous.

We often talk about Security but Privacy is a much more comprehensive and in my belief a much more human place to start.  We’ll talk about those differences tomorrow.

That said, it’s not entirely clear to me that your customers care as much about this as we think they do.  Neither the free market nor government action has really solved this problem although each is showing movement in this direction.  We’ll talk about that on Wednesday.

Of course, you can act now and let the rest of the world catch up with you.  That’s Thursday’s topic.

Until then, crack open a cold one and celebrate Data Privacy Day.  I’ll bring the chips.

I’m Carter Edmonds with 20CREEK.  We help you build IT you’ll brag about.
